GREEN POLICY

DR. B. C. ROY COLLEGE OF PHARMACY AND ALLIED HEALTH SCIENCES

 

Dr. B. C. Roy College of Pharmacy and Allied Health Sciences (BCRCP) is committed to create environment consciousness among its stakeholders for a sustainable future. One of the Program Educational Objectives defined by the college states “To produce Diploma, Under Graduates and Postgraduates who would have developed strong background knowledge in Pharmaceutical Sciences and ability to use these ideas in an environmentally sustainable fashion in their chosen fields of profession”, which makes it imperative that we follow certain policies that will enable the students to imbibe the sense of green practices during their professional applications.

To achieve the objective of imparting professional education with eco-friendly and sustainable ethos, the college has adopted a GREEN POLICY to be implemented incrementally to make the Campus environmentally sustainable, which is as follows:

  • Rain Water Harvesting:

Being situated very near to the Tropic of Cancer, the College bears high fluctuations in temperature between summer and winter, while the city experiences moderate to heavy rainfall during the rainy season. Particularly, during the summer months, the water table often recedes deep down leading to drinking water shortage in some areas.  Therefore, the college, as a responsible organization, should promote water conservation, through Rain Water Harvesting and channelling the extra water to subsoil through the harvesting pit.

  • Water Recycling:

The excess water running down to the harvesting pit should be used for non-essential purposes like gardening, playground watering, car-wash and cleaning the perimeters, thereby reducing the dependency on municipal supply.

  • Restricting Entry of Automobiles:

The college should encourage reduction in use of fossil-fuel based vehicles inside the campus to reduce air-pollution as far as practicable. The campus should be a “No-Horn” zone to reduce sound pollution. All non-essential automobiles should be parked outside the campus. Strict vigil should be maintained at the entry points to enforce this policy. A register to that effect should be maintained at the Main Gate Security Room.

  • Use of Bicycles / Battery-powered Vehicles:

The college should encourage its stakeholders, particularly, the students to use bicycles and / or battery powered two wheelers as far as possible, not only to reduce air-pollution and dependence on fossil-fuels, but also to promote healthy lifestyle. 

  • Plastic Ban:

The college should encourage use of biodegradable carry-bags by banning single-use plastics in the campus and following the policy strictly.  Awareness posters should be erected in the campus to sensitize all stakeholders to this effect.  Coloured bins for non-biodegradable waste including plastic should be placed at strategic locations throughout the campus to collect such waste.

  • Landscaping with Greenery:

To promote pollution free sustainable environment it is imperative to plant and maintain trees and plants not only inside the campus, but also encourage stakeholders including students to adopt this practice in their community.  The college should, therefore, maintain a green and lush campus for beautification and as a part of its green practice. As an extension to this policy, a well-maintained Medicinal Garden with floral diversity is a necessity for both academic and environmental purpose.

  • Carbon-Neutrality:

In order to reduce the use of paper for daily activities, the college should promote technology in classrooms and in communication as far as practicable, through the use of various e-platforms, such as ERP, Biometric Attendance, emails, websites, WhatsApp, LMS, etc. to ultimately gain paperless office status.  Coupled with ban on plastics, restricted entry and use of fossil-fuel based vehicles inside the campus, water conservation and greenery, the college should strive to progressively achieve the status of a Carbon-Neutral Campus. 

  • Use of Alternate Sources of Energy:

The college should progressively strive to achieve self-reliance on energy requirements through adopting energy conservation practices and use of alternate sources of energy.  This should include use of energy saving fixtures and equipments such as LED bulbs, monitors and sensors, recycling biodegradable waste for generation of bio-gas and setting up of solar energy generation facilities.

  • Waste Management Efforts:

Every effort should be made to reduce, reuse and recycle waste generated throughout the campus.  Waste management efforts should include collection and segregation of different types of waste (solid, liquid, electronic, biomedical, etc.) and its scientific disposal. 

  • Quality Audits:

The college should ensure that the above mentioned green practices are achieved progressively through conducting regular quality audits by external agencies.
